From Landfill to Lifespan: OnTheList Sustainable Fashion Practices

Diego Dultzin Lacoste, co-founder of OnTheList, recently delivered a guest lecture at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to students of the MA in Sustainable Fashion and Innovation. During his presentation, he introduced the business model of OnTheList and illustrated the concept of the circular economy and how society can rethink progress. This showed how, through a change in perspective, people can redesign the way the economy works.

Furthermore, Diego provided a comparative analysis of the business models of second-hand fashion and OnTheList. While the former operates on a consumer-to-consumer (C2C) basis, OnTheList functions on a brand-to-consumer (B2C) model. Despite these differences, both models share a common objective: “Keep the product as long as we can use rather than send them to the landfill.” Diego said. As of 2024, OnTheList has successfully diverted 2.1 million items from landfills. He also addressed the challenges associated with recycling clothing, such as the decomposition of fabric materials and the lengthy degradation process.

Diego highlighted one of OnTheList’s key success factors: its extensive membership database. This resource enables OnTheList to make informed decisions regarding targeted invitations and personalized communications. Consequently, OnTheList enhances convenience for both the company and its consumers, creating happiness for the consumers and benefiting the ecosystem.
