Exploring Industry Practices in Testing and Retail Logistics

Organized by Redress, students from the MA in Sustainable Fashion and Innovation programme at the School of Fashion and Textiles (SFT) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) participated in an industry-focused educational session on Testing & Retail Logistics on 19 March 2025.  The visit featured two companies at the forefront of sustainable fashion practices: The HULA, a pre-loved luxury fashion platform, and SGS Hong Kong Limited, a global leader in textile testing.

Retail logistics and testing are integral to fostering circularity in the fashion industry. Logistics, as illustrated by The HULA, ensures the efficient redistribution of pre-loved garments, extending product lifecycles. Meanwhile, SGS’s rigorous textile testing guarantees fabric durability, a critical factor in garment longevity. Together, these processes reduce waste, enhance resource efficiency, and support sustainable fashion goals.

The HULA: Revolutionizing Circular Fashion

The HULA, a pioneer in the pre-loved luxury fashion sector, is redefining sustainable fashion through its innovative resale platform. By extending the lifecycle of high-quality garments and accessories, the platform reduces waste and challenges the fast-fashion cycle. Its model relies on a meticulous authentication process and quality assurance system, ensuring trust and durability in pre-loved luxury items. Through its digital platform, The HULA not only democratizes access to exclusive fashion but also educates consumers on sustainable consumption. The company’s mission is to foster a cultural shift toward valuing durability and conscious consumption, demonstrating that circular business models can harmonize style, sustainability, and ethical consumerism.

SGS Hong Kong Limited: Advancing Textile Durability

SGS Hong Kong Limited, a global authority in inspection, verification, and testing services, plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable fashion through its comprehensive textile testing capabilities. The company is dedicated to ensuring fabrics, fibers, and yarns meet stringent quality and sustainability standards to enhance garment longevity.

Through essential evaluations, such as strength, functionality, color fastness, and shrinkage resistance, SGS validates textiles can withstand wear and environmental stress. These assessments align with sustainable fashion principles by encouraging mindful production and extending product lifecycles. SGS’s dedication to quality assurance empowers brands to design long-lasting, eco-conscious apparel, fostering a shift toward circularity within the fashion industry.

This Education Industry Experience highlighted the transformative potential of innovative logistics and quality control in advancing sustainability within the fashion industry. By focusing on durability, functionality, and environmental responsibility, both brands and consumers can take significant strides toward a more sustainable future, ensuring every garment contributes to a circular and eco-conscious fashion ecosystem.

A special thanks to Redress for organizing such a meaningful and impactful experience, further inspiring sustainable practices in the industry.
