Seminar Explores Political Risk Analysis in Operations and Supply Chain Management

Organised by the ESG Research and Sustainable Fashion Hub, the School of Fashion and Textiles (SFT) was honored to host Dr. Rémi CHARPIN, Associate Professor in the Department of Logistics and Operations Management at HEC Montréal, for a seminar on Political Risk Analysis in Operations and Supply Chain Management held on 9 September 2025. The session, coordinated by Dr. Fan Di, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of SFT, attracted around 20 research students from SFT and other departments.

Dr. Charpin shared valuable insights into how geopolitical tensions and host-country political risks influence firms’ foreign supply bases and global networks. He explored the concept of friendshoring and its implications for both firms and policymakers, while also highlighting the strengths and limitations of quantitative versus qualitative approaches to political risk analysis. Using the case of foreign firms operating in China, his talk provided practical illustrations of these complex challenges.

With over a decade of research experience in political risk management, Dr. Charpin has published in leading journals such as the Journal of Operations Management and the International Journal of Operations & Production Management. His engaging seminar deepened participants’ understanding of the intersection between political risk and supply chain strategy.
