In today’s world, sustainability is more critical than ever, and the concept of “eco-materials” is gaining attention. But how should we define eco-materials? This was the focus of a lively discussion at the Fashion Summit (HK) 2024, moderated by Prof. Joanne Yip, Associate Dean of the School of Fashion and Textiles from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
The panel, titled “Uncover the Eco-material,” included speakers from various fields: Ms. Yi Di Chen, Founder and Creative Director of MATTTER; Ms. Denise Ng, Head of Softlines, Connectivity and Products, SGS Hong Kong Limited; Mr. Francis Tsang, Cofounder of ChromeFree® Leather Alliance; and Mr. Jason Wang from The LYCRA Company.
The discussion began with the panelists defining “eco-materials” and then exploring several key topics. Beyond reducing carbon emissions, creating durable products, and promoting recycling, the panel highlighted the importance of traceability, compostability, and responsible practices as essential for making materials more sustainable. The entire production process should be considered to minimize environmental impact, with a focus on genuine communication and marketing by brands. They also underscored the role of circular eco-materials in promoting sustainability and highlighted the necessity of consumer education to address over-consumerism.
The discussion concluded with insights on how luxury brands can lead in sustainability. Unlike fast fashion, luxury brands can encourage responsible buying habits and support the circular economy through their cultural heritage and financial resources.
In summary, the panel demonstrated that eco-materials are about more than just the materials themselves. They encompass the processes, ethics, and consumer behaviors that surround them. These insights are essential for building a more sustainable future in the fashion industry.
